We're so glad you're here! Stamping Basics should get you well on your way to a great craft. In the future we hope to add more techniques as well as have pages of step-by-step instruction for various stamping products. Let us know your interests. If you're at a total loss as to what to buy and need some suggestions please feel free to call: 617 413-2912. We're here to help.
There are basically three types of stamps:

Wood Mounted: A high quality red rubber stamp mounted to a hardwood block. Excellent image transfer.

Cling Mounted: these stamps are really nice. They have the quality of the red rubber but the versatility of easily seeing where the image is being placed.
They are more easily stored because they don't have the large wood block attached to them.
They are presented on a clear acrylic sheet. You peel them off and place them on a clear acrylic block for transferring the image.

Clear stamps: these don't usually have the same quality image transfer as the red rubber stamps but are a economical choice for those who want a lot of images with the least investment.
There are basically three types of ink

Dye  Ink: This is ink that is similar to the kind of ink you find on a felt pad at the office supply store with the exception that Lilly's Art only carries the archival quality dye inks. In scrapbooking and card making using quality ink like this is encouraged because you want the crafts you created to last a lifetime for sharing with others.

Pigment ink: these inks are known for their archival quality and 'wetter' properties. They are especially useful for embossing techniques because the embossing powders stick better to the wetter ink.

Crafting Ink: This ink is used for paper crafts as well as for adhering to surfaces other than paper.
Rubber Stamping is usually applied to paper. Although as you can see there are the crafting inks that will allow you to adhere to other surfaces. We thought our expertise was more in keeping with paper crafting so for the purposes of this instruction we will keep to that.
Lillys has many beautiful papers that you can use. We presently carry a beautiful line of Hero Arts papers and embellishments that make card creation a snap.
But you can use any paper or envelopes that you find appealing. You can also stamp right onto your scrapbooking creations to add depth and variety.
I find that the easiest way to apply the ink to the stamp is to turn the stamp impression up and the ink down and dab it until a good amount of ink is collected on the stamp.
You can use different color inks on various areas of the stamp to get different effects.
Be cautious not to get ink on the block or the outside rim of the stamp or you may get an undesired outline on your impression. You can use a cotton swab or paper towel to carefully remove any accidental messes.
Apply the stamp to your paper with even pressure. Try not to 'rock' the stamp as this might also leave an outline impression.
